The Albula and Bernina railway lines constitute the central element of the UNESCO World Heritage. The Albula Railway was completed in 1903, the Bernina Railway in 1910. The Albula Railway was constructed as a classic mountain railway with steam engines. The layout of the line and the engineering structures built using locally quarried stone mark the zenith of the classic era of railway construction. The Bernina Railway immediately became the model for many projects that were to be built later. The Bernina Railway is the highest transalpine railway and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world.

The Bernina Express runs between Chur, the oldest city in Switzerland, and the village of Tirano, in the picturesque region of Veltlin. The train makes short work of the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes of up to 70mm per metre of incline that appear along the route. Since summer 1998, the section between Thusis and Tirano has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The panorama trip with the Glacier Express through the Swiss Alps follows a route across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels, and over the Oberalp Pass at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres above sea level. A journey in the absolute classic among Alpine trains.

Chur is the only Swiss city with its own winter- and summer sports region, accessible with a state-of-the-art aerial cableway directly from the city centre.
