Well worth seeing and car free

Chur boasts a charming Old Town, which has been lovingly preserved and restored. Cobblestone pavements, mediaeval buildings and historical fountains give Chur its incomparable ambience. Visitors can explore Chur’s most important sights by following a city map or audio guide during a leisurely stroll through the car-free Old Town.

Chur is Switzerland’s oldest town (according to history books, Chur is 5000 years old) with a history as a settlement going back between 11’000 and 13’000 years and which has an 800 year old cathedral. To help find the most important witnesses to the town’s history, the city map and the audio guide will lead you through the town. The audio guide is a personal city tour on your mobile phone or MP3 player. It is available in 13 languages and reveals interesting information about the history and culture of the Alpine city in 32 chapters. Examples include the Gothic old town dating from the 15th and 16th century, where the influences of the neighbouring countries remain visible today and attest to the skills of the Italian master builders, and the cathedral with its wonderful, three-sided carved altar dating from the 15th century. Visits to the Raetian Museum with its cultural-historical and folk art collection, as well as the Art Museum with its Grisons’ paintings and sculptures from the 18th – 20th century, are particularly rewarding.
